Let go of the handlebars at 60 km/h and the bike keeps going straight. It’s not magic or your own balance: it’s the spinning wheels. A rotating wheel is a gyroscope, and a gyroscope resists changing its orientation in space. That effect—gyroscopic torque—is one of the reasons why a moving motorcycle is inherently stable, while it falls over when standing still.

But there is one condition that almost no one mentions: the gyroscopic effect only works at full capacity as long as the wheel maintains firm contact with the ground.

What happens when the wheel leaves the ground

A gyroscope needs mass spinning at a constant speed to stabilize. The instant the tire bounces and loses contact, two things degrade at once.

The wheel stops receiving torque from the engine and brake, so its rotation speed is no longer governed by you: it is left at the mercy of inertia. And at the same time, upon losing support, the ground reaction that helped maintain the plane of rotation disappears. The gyroscope keeps spinning, but without the anchor that translated its stability into the motorcycle's stability.

It happens in thousandths of a second. But in those thousandths, the bike loses part of the "free" stability provided by the physics of rotation. And it does so without warning, because the bounce is invisible.

Keeping the gyroscope anchored

The Gravitational Resonator does not act on the wheel's rotation—that is the job of the engine and brake. It acts on what allows that rotation to be translated into stability: contact with the ground. By pushing the tire toward the asphalt at the moment of lift-off, it keeps the gyroscope anchored, working in the correct plane, delivering the stability that the physics of rotation grants to every moving motorcycle.

Your bike stays upright thanks to the physics of a gyroscope. And a gyroscope only stabilizes if its wheel isn't traveling through the air.
