Staying connected to the ground
"Our wheel's mission is a singular one: to remain connected to the ground".
There should be no unsprung mass traveling through the air.
We have the ground, we have the rubber, we have the contact patch and the tire footprint.
What happens when the wheel detaches?
The wheel begins to behave like a ballistic component, above all, there is a total loss of traction: the wheel is no longer in contact with the ground and continues to store kinetic energy through its rotation.
What we must control is not the entirety of the system — swingarm, wheel, and so on — but precisely that amount of change of state.
“This matters because the moment the wheel detaches and begins to skid, the state of the system changes completely.”
